Building a Bioregional Future: From Taos to the World
Welcome to a journey of community resilience and regenerative transformation. The Taos Community Resilience Coalition represents the first step in a visionary movement to create thriving, sustainable bioregions across the planet.
Together, we're pioneering a model that honors traditional wisdom while embracing innovative solutions to today's most pressing challenges. This presentation outlines our path from a single pilot project to a global network of bioregional resilience hubs (more details here).
What is the Coalition?
Citizens
Engaged community members contributing local knowledge and passion
Organizations
Nonprofits, businesses, and educational institutions providing expertise
Local Government & Civic Leaders
Government agencies and officials supporting civic engagement and policy development
Community Resilience Initiative
The shared strategic plan co-created and upheld by all partners
A collaborative network uniting diverse stakeholders to co-create and uphold a comprehensive Community Resilience Initiative. The coalition serves as a living bridge between sectors, fostering communication, resource-sharing, and aligned action toward our shared vision.
Why We Are Beginning in Taos
Cultural Richness
Taos stands at the intersection of Indigenous, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures with over 1,000 years of sustainable living wisdom. This cultural tapestry provides a unique foundation for bioregional innovation that respects historical knowledge.
Ecological Significance
Located within the Upper Rio Grande watershed, Taos sits at a critical ecological junction where mountains, desert, and river systems converge. This diversity creates both resilience challenges and regenerative opportunities.
Community Readiness
Taos already possesses a strong network of community organizations, active citizens, and progressive leadership ready to embrace systematic change and serve as a model for other communities worldwide.
A Living Laboratory for Regeneration
Year 1: Foundation & Planning
Comprehensive bioregional mapping, establishment of community councils, and stakeholder engagement. We'll identify key leverage points and build the relationships necessary for lasting change.
Year 2: Pilot Implementation
Launch on-the-ground projects across multiple domains: food systems, energy, water, waste, and governance. Each initiative applies regenerative principles while addressing local needs.
Year 3: Evaluation & Local Scaling
Rigorously assess outcomes, document methodologies, and expand successful initiatives. We'll create shareable frameworks and protocols for other communities to adopt.
Growing the Movement Together
Co-Creation
An open invitation to communities in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Crestone, Boulder, Asheville and beyond to join as early adopters
Parallel Development
Multiple communities refining the model simultaneously, adapting to local conditions
Collective Learning
Shared toolkits, regular knowledge exchanges, and collaborative problem-solving
By working together across our region, we can accelerate learning and amplify impact. Each community brings unique perspectives and resources, creating a richer palette of solutions than any one community could develop alone.

Each pilot initiative addresses critical aspects of community resilience while modeling regenerative approaches. Projects are designed to be interconnected, creating a web of solutions that strengthen each other and provide multiple benefits across ecological, economic, and social domains.
Build, Learn, Adapt
PLAN
Design initiatives with clear metrics and community input
ACT
Implement projects with diverse stakeholders
EVALUATE
Gather quantitative and qualitative feedback
ITERATE
Refine approach based on evidence and insight
Our approach embraces continuous learning and adaptation. Quarterly evaluation cycles ensure we can quickly identify what's working and what needs refinement. Cross-community knowledge sharing amplifies our collective intelligence, allowing innovations from one location to benefit the entire network.
From Pilots to a Planetary Network
Phase 1: 5-10 Pilot Communities
Years 1-3: Southwest U.S. focus
Establish core methodologies
Document case studies and outcomes
Phase 2: 50-100 Bioregions
Years 4-7: Continental expansion
Regional training hubs
Bioregional certification standards
Phase 3: Global Bioregional Coalition
Year 8+: Worldwide integration
Complementary governance systems
Global metrics and shared learning
Our scaling strategy balances ambitious growth with thoughtful development. As we expand, each bioregion maintains autonomy while participating in an increasingly robust global framework of shared principles and practices.
Governance Rooted in Place
Watershed Boundaries
Natural systems as the foundation of governance
Collaborative Decision-Making
Inclusive processes honoring diverse stakeholders
Global Values, Local Implementation
Shared principles with place-based application
Our governance model transcends traditional political boundaries by organizing around watersheds—the natural containers of life. This approach integrates indigenous wisdom with scientific understanding, creating decision-making processes that reflect the actual ecological relationships of our bioregion while honoring the autonomy of local communities.

Engage as a Community
Civic leaders, municipalities, and citizen groups can join our network of early adopters. We provide frameworks, tools, and peer support to launch your own bioregional coalition.
Partner with Specific Initiatives
Organizations and businesses can contribute expertise, resources, or funding to specific projects that align with your mission, creating mutually beneficial collaborations.
Become an Individual Steward
Individual citizens can participate through local projects, skill-sharing, or ambassador roles. Every person brings valuable perspectives and abilities to this collective effort.
Together, we can weave a living network of thriving bioregions that honors the unique character of each place while building global resilience.
